An official local media of the Democratic Civil Administration in Manbij city, northern Syria, called on international and Arabic media outlets to head to northeast Syria and shed light on the suffering of millions of residents due to Turkey’s cut off of the Euphrates River water.

Co-chair of the Media Office in Manbij, Roula Silo, said that during their media coverage of the area, they found that most of the citizens, especially those residing close to the river, are suffering from the problem of securing water for drinking and irrigation.

Silo considered that what Turkey has done and is still doing, is an evidence of the Turkish hostility for all the communities of the Syrian people and a clear violation of all the international agreements regarding the Euphrates water.

About seven million people reside in northeast Syria, according the Media Office.

For more than three months, Turkey has limited the flow of the Euphrates into Syria, depriving large numbers of people of usable water. Turkey reduced the flow of water from the Euphrates River into northeast Syria’s dam gradually, reducing the amount of water received to unprecedented lows.

Turkey keeps water in six dams, the largest of which is Ataturk Dam, the second largest in the Middle East, with a storage capacity of 48 billion m³, violating the international agreement they signed with Syria in 1987 which stated that Syria’s share of water coming from Turkey is 500 m³ per second.

The water flow to the Euphrates River is now limited to less than 200 cubic meters, according to the General Administration of Dams in Northeastern Syria.
