US, Germany Consulates condemn Erbil Court decision against Duhok, Badinan Journalists

The consulates of the United States and Germany in the Kurdistan Region expressed their position on the decision of the Court of Cassation regarding the imprisonment of journalists and activists in Dohuk.
The US Consulate General said during a statement, that their country respects freedom of expression and opinion, which is part of the identity of the United States and will continue to defend those principles as part of the basic values.
Adding to that: The United States hopes that every government will respect the diplomats who meet like journalists with various people to complete their transactions.
For their part, the German Consulate General in Erbil expressed their displeasure at the decision of the Court of Cassation in the Kurdistan Region, pointing out that its decision does not contain any evidence that would punish the Badinan detainees.
More on that, they emphasized that exchanging ideas freely with journalists and activists is part of diplomatic affairs and that the decision of the Kurdistan Region Court of Cassation is against the spirit of democracy in the Kurdistan Region.
The Court of Cassation in the Kurdistan Region had approved, on 4/28/2021, the imprisonment of journalists and activists in Badinan for a period of 6 years, despite local and international objections and denunciations.
