Iraqi President confirms Iraq's centrality in facing security challenges

On Tuesday, May 4, 2021, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met with Washington’s delegation headed by the White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk. The senior delegation included the Counselor of the State Department Derek Chollet, Acting Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern affairs Joey Hood and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East Dana Stroul. The meeting took place at Baghdad Palace.


Iraqi- US relationships were discussed, with focus on the ways to enhance these in terms of politics, the economy and in security- cultural related matters, and where there could be further dialogue on strategic issues of common interest.


During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of continuing the fight against terror as well as rooting it out from all the globe.


Latest regional and international developments, in addition to issues of common concern were reviewed in the meeting.


Iraqi President Salih confirmed that Iraq pursues a balanced policy that paves the ways to defuse the crisis and calm the tensions in the region.


Iraq's privileged geographical position called Mesopotamia from ancient times in addition to the recent support for its security and sovereignty is a pivotal key and a starting point to address the environmental challenges as well as tackling the climate change and desertification and work towards promoting the use of clean energy, President Salih said, while the importance of adopting sustainable management of water resources is also required.  And these could be done through working together for having regional and international common systems, he added.


The members of the US's delegation reiterated their country's support for Iraq to be a secure, stable and sovereign state. They confirmed that the US is committed to fighting terror, building peace and strengthening Iraqi economy, with focus on the need to have further work and joint coordination where there could be further dialogue on strategic issues of common interest across all the fields in ways that best serve the interests of both peoples.
