ISIS terrorist groups carried out two terrorist attacks on the security forces in Kirkuk and Saladin governorates.

A security source told PUKmedia that ISIS terrorist groups attacked a Federal Police station in Al-Rashad district in Kirkuk governorate.

He added that the police forces responded to the attack and managed to force the terrorists to flee, indicating that there were no casualties among the ranks of the police forces.

On the other hand, ISIS terrorist groups bombed a camp belonging to the security forces in the Al-Zarka area, which is within the borders of Saladin Governorate.

An informed source told PUKmedia that the camp belonging to the security forces was subjected to mortar shelling, indicating that the bombing did not result in any casualties among the ranks of the security forces.

Although Iraq declared victory over ISIS in 2017, which had overrun swathes of the country and neighboring Syria three years earlier, sleeper cells holed up in mountains and deserts continue to carry out deadly attacks across the country, often at night in remote areas and with light weapons, especially in the areas that are disputed between the KRG and the Iraqi Government and the attack have recently risen.

ISIS militants ambush, kidnap and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Salahaddin.

Being part of the disputed areas, Kirkuk surroundings are still a hotspot for ISIS activities. The terrorists' sleeper cells exploit the security vacuum that exist in those areas, gaps that were created after the withdrawal of Kurdish Peshmerga forces in late 2017.

According to Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution, the disputed areas are defined as being Arabized during the fallen Iraqi Baath Regime rule.
