On Saturday, the Kurdistan Parliament's Committee of the Kurdish territories outside the administration og the KRG issued a statement condemning the terrorist attack that targeted the Peshmerga forces in the Prde District (Altun Kupri) of Kirkuk.

In its statement, the committee said: "With deep concern and as a result of the security vacuum and taking advantage of it again in the Kurdish regions, armed groups from the ISIS terrorist organization attacked the Peshmerga forces in the Prde area, which resulted in the death and injury of a number of Peshmerga forces' personnel.

We in the Committee of the Kurdish territories outside the administration og the KRG, offer condolences to the families of the martyrs and a speedy recovery for the wounded. We call on the federal government to abide by the agreements concluded between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government in forming joint forces between the Peshmerga and the federal army. We also call for speeding up the implementation of the constitutional Article 140 steps to normalize the situation in the deducted areas."

Iraq has announced military victory over ISIS after 3 years of battle with the terrorists. However, remnants of the group continue to impose threats, especially in the areas that are disputed between the KRG and the Iraqi Government.

Being part of the disputed areas, Kirkuk surroundings are still a hotspot for ISIS activities. The terrorists' sleeper cells exploit the security vacuum that exist in those areas, gaps that were created after the withdrawal of Kurdish Peshmerga forces in late 2017.

According to Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution, the disputed areas are defined as being Arabized during the fallen Iraqi Baath Regime rule.

In another context, 16 parliamentary bloc including the major ruling parties in the Kurdistan Parliament have issued a joint statement in which they appealed the Iraqi government to cooperate with the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces fill security vacuum in the disputed areas.
