The Ministry of Peshmerga in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced on Saturday that Peshmerga forces thwarted an attack by ISIS terrorists on Peshmerga points between Dibis and Prde (Altun Kupri) in Kirkuk.

In the wake of the battles and confrontations that took place in the area, 3 Peshmerga elements were killed, one of them with the rank of officer, while two others were wounded.

The ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the Peshmerga forces responded violently to the attacks of ISIS terrorists and thwarted them, noting that there are a large number of deaths among the terrorists.

The Peshmerga forces also said in a different statement statement on Saturday the ISIS terrorists attack occurred as a result of existing security gap between the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army.

"We have warned of the dangers of terrorists in areas with security gaps for many times before. Unfortunately, the reason for the terrorist suppression is the security gap between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army, and we emphasize that these areas need joint and comprehensive cooperation with the Iraqi army," the ministry said.

The terrorists attacked a 10th Infantry Brigade barricade from the Zurgazraw heights on the borders of the 5th Brigade. The attack was countered by Peshmerga forces and the terrorists fled.

Iraq has announced military victory over ISIS after 3 years of battle with the terrorists. However, remnants of the group continue to impose threats, especially in the areas that are disputed between the KRG and the Iraqi Government.

Being part of the disputed areas, Kirkuk surroundings are still a hotspot for ISIS activities. The terrorists' sleeper cells exploit the security vacuum that exist in those areas.

ISIS militants ambush, kidnap and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Salahaddin.

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), issued a statement on Saturday regarding the terrorist attack.

The statement said: "We strongly condemn the terrorist attack against the Peshmerga forces in Prde, and we affirm that we must work with all of our energy to confront those cowardly attacks launched by terrorist groups and fill the security gaps in those areas.

These terrorist attacks tell us that we must be more aware to confront terrorism and intimidation in all its forms and for any reason. We must work to uproot this dangerous scourge that targets global peace and security.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of our martyrs who sacrificed themselves to protect security and stability in the Kurdistan Region, and we wish a speedy recovery for the wounded."
