The Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi affirmed on Sunday that legal and time-based mechanisms have been set for the withdrawal of the US-led global coalition troops from the country.

The Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces hosted an Iftar banquet on Sunday with a number of leaders and officers of the security and military services.

"We succeeded, through real, responsible, and constructive dialogue, in adopting legal and time-based mechanisms for the withdrawal of the international coalition forces, as Iraqi forces are ready to assume greater security tasks in the face of Daesh (ISIS) remnants," said the PM during the banquet.

"There are still challenges and needs that will gradually become available in order for us to be fully prepared to take on all the tasks," he added.

"We have formed a specialized technical military committee to determine the Iraqi needs and necessities, as well as the mechanisms for taking over the tasks from the international coalition forces," he added.

In January 2020, following the killing of Iranian general and Iraqi PMF leader in a US drone attack, the Iraqi Council of Representatives voted to expel all foreign troops from the country.

The US has gradually reduced its troops in Iraq and about 2,500 U.S. service members are currently in the country to help it counter ISIS, according to the Defense Department.
