The US State Department has awarded 500,000 $ grant for the preservation of the Badinan Gate in Amedi, the US Consulate General in Erbil announced on Friday.

The US Consulate General said in a statement that during his visit to Amedi town, 73 km northeast of Duhok, US Consul-General in Erbil, Rob Waller, announced that the U.S. Department of State has awarded a $500,000 grant to preserve and protect Badinan Gate.

Adding that "the U.S. government is determined to help the IKR preserve and restore its remarkable cultural heritage, and is thrilled to work with our Kurdish friends to achieve that goal."

"We hope this grant will be a new bridge to further strengthen the ties between the American people and the people of the IKR. Badinan Gate will be preserved for all of humanity, while helping to economically revitalize the community."

The Badinan Gate is a beautiful arched gate and is all that remains of the fortress the ancient mountaintop town of Amadiya once was.

This Ottoman-era gate dates to the Badinan Emirate, but its location has been the entrance to the town of Amedi for millennia. The large solar symbol (historically associated with the Kurds) surrounded by four knots suggests the significance of Amedi in the political geography of Kurdistan in antiquity.
