Today, April 16, coincides with the Kurdistan Environment Day, which is also the day that chemical weapons were used against the Kurds for the first time.

The day was set by the Kurdistan Parliament as a tribute to the anniversary of bombing the Balisan and Sheikh Wasanan regions of the Kurdistan Region with chemical weapons by the fallen Iraqi Baath regime, the first chemical bombing against the people of Kurdistan.

Annually, events and seminars are held in the Kurdistan Region that highlight the importance of protecting Kurdistan's environment and its nature, after thousands of villages witnessed burning, extermination and poisonous gas pollution during Saddam's wars against the Kurds.

Regarding the day, environmentalist Hazir Ismail told PUKmedia that the most important cause of danger to the environment is humans, by not cleaning his environment, calling on citizens to keep the environment clean the same way they keep with their homes clean.

"Environmental awareness is necessary to protect the nature of Kurdistan, especially during trips and picnics," he said.

The environmentalist also pointed out that the volume of pollution caused by vehicles is very large and in Kurdistan, pollution continues to increases due to the gases emitted from cars, stressing that many citizens view the environment as an important good issue.

"Protecting the environment is the responsibility of all , beginning from our homes, to include all parts of Kurdistan and the world," Ismail added.

It is noteworthy that the World Environment Day, which June 5 of every year, was celebrated for the first time in 1974. The day was set by the United Nations aiming to raise awareness and generating political momentum around growing concerns such as depletion of the ozone layer, toxic chemicals, desertification and global warming. Today it has evolved into a global platform for taking action on urgent environmental issues. Millions of people have participated over the years, which has helped bring about a change in our consumption habits, as well as in national and international environmental policy.
