Today, Friday April 16, 34 years pass since the bombing of the Balisan and Sheikh Wasanan regions in the Kurdistan Region, with forbidden chemical weapons.

This was the first chemical attack against the Kurds. It happened 11 months before the gas attack on Halabja.

On April 16, 1987, the fallen regime of the fascist Saddam Hussein bombed the areas of Balisan and Sheikh Wasanan, with chemical weapons, killing 263 citizens, wounding more than 620 others, and 72 men were forcibly disapeared .

The fallen Baath regime's planes bombed the two regions with mustard and cyanide gas, both are banned by international laws. This was the first chemical attack against the Kurds. Sadly, the crime was later repeated in Halabja and other cities and towns of Kurdistan amid shameful silence of the international community during the Iraq-Iran war.

Every year, the masses of Kurdistan remember the martyrs of Balisan, Sheikh Wasanan, but major ceremonies will not be held today, due to measures to combat the outbreak of Corona virus.

On March 16, 1988, just 5 days before the Kurdish new year of Newroz, the city of Halabja was subjected to the most heinous crime against humanity, which is the bombing of the city with chemical weapons by the fallen Iraqi Baath regime.

Over 5,000 innocent people were martyred as a result of this crime, including women, the elderly, and children and more than 10,000 were injured.
