KRG’s Ministry of Peshmerga stresses coordination with SDF against ISIS
Kurdistan 07:33 PM - 2021-04-15.
On Thursday, Secretary General of the Ministry of Peshmerga in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Jabar Yawar stressed the necessity for the coordination between the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeast Syria against ISIS.
”The source of the threat of ISIS is not only Hawl Camp; ISIS exists in many regions in Iraq, especially the disputed areas of northern Iraq, which have a length of more than 1,100 kilometers and a depth in some areas that reaches 40 kilometers,” Yawar told North Press.
Shelters other than Hawl Camp
Yawar referred to safe havens for ISIS in which it could move easily, which are the Qarjug Mountains, Hamrin, al-Muqdadiya district, Jalawla district in Diyala, Tuz Khurmatu, Kafri Sharqi, and areas in Kirkuk.
Moreover, it exists in other regions affiliated with Mosul and desert areas affiliated with Anbar, as well as gaps on the borders between Syria and Iraq.
”Therefore we assure that Hawl Camp is not the only threat to the region,” Yawar added.
He called for coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi Army to control the region and the district and eliminate the remnants of ISIS scattered along the disputed areas from Khanaqin to the east to Rabia to the west.
He stressed the necessity of coordination with the SDF without the intervention of any party in the other one’s internal affairs.
”We do not intervene in issues related to Syria in general or northern Syria in particular, as each region has its autonomy, regions, and borders,” he pointed out.
Hundreds of operations
”456 terrorist operations were carried out in the regions mentioned above in 2018, which resulted in the killing, wounding and kidnaping of 1,742 [people],” he indicated.
”In 2019, ISIS carried out about 270 terrorist operations that resulted in the killing, wounding, and kidnapping of 1,260, whereas in 2020, the region witnessed 260 terrorist operations resulted in the killing, wounding, and kidnapping of 812.”
Since the beginning of 2021, 51 terrorist operations were carried out, leaving 260 between killed, wounded and kidnapped, according to Yawar.
”This indicates that ISIS sleeper cells still exist, in addition to the fact that its ideology remains widespread in the region to this day, without joint international effort to combat it.”
”The coordination is very important as ISIS poses a threat to the whole region not only Iraq or KRG, but it threatens Syria in general and the regions of northeast Syria in particular, the security of regional countries, and even Europe,” he stated.
He stressed the need for coordination between all countries threatened by ISIS under the supervision of the Global Coalition.
