Members of the Federal Supreme Court took the constitutional oath on Sunday, before the President of the Republic of Iraq, where two of the new members are Kurds.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Baghdad's Peace Palace before President Barham Salih, and in the presence of the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faeq Zaidan.

While delivering a speech to members of the Federal Court, President Salih noted that Iraq has taken an important step towards completing the requirements of one of its most important constitutional institutions.

He stressed that the judicial body is the faithful guardian of Iraq’s democratic system, the rights and freedoms of the public, as well as the guarantor of law enforcement, and the constitution.

The President added that completing the formation of the Federal Court represents an important and fundamental step to fulfilling the legal and constitutional requirements for holding early elections. This represents the national and common will of Iraqis, who wish to express their aspirations without external influences, and to embark on the road to building a political process and parliament that responds to the will of the electorate.

Two of the new members have Kurdish nationality.

It is noteworthy that the Iraqi parliament passed an amendment to the 2005 Federal Court Act in March which was adding 4 Islamic jurists from the Sunni and Shiite sects to the court, giving them veto power and the ability to review, approve, and reject new laws.

The Iraqi federal court is the highest judicial authority in the country and the independent judicial body that interprets the constitution and determines the constitutionality of laws and regulations. It is responsible for adjudicating disputes in federal cases, taking objections and appeals to decisions made by the president, prime minister, and parliament speaker. It also ratifies the election results.
