The Director of Baghdad's Rusafa Health Directorate, Abdul Ghani Al-Saadi, said on Saturday that 126,000 citizens have been vaccinated, out of a total of 40 million people in Iraq, which is a very small percentage in the process of community immunization despite the availability of vaccines.

Al-Saadi added in a press statement, that there is a fear of side effects and complications such as blood clots that have not yet been diagnosed by scientists, and their association with the vaccine.

He explained that people who were vaccinated with the first dose will be given the second dose after three months for the same type.

He pointed out that Iraq recently received 50 thousand doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine, and 336 thousand doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the vaccination campaign was launched through 700 outlets across the country.

Al-Saadi said that Iraq has completed all procedures to provide 21 million and a half doses of vaccines from Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Sinopharm which will arrive within the next few days, and they will be distributed among all health institutions.

So far, Iraq has recorded over 911,000 coronavirus cases with more than 804,000 recoveries and over 14,600 deaths from the virus.

Iraq has recently witnessed a hike in coronavirus cases as about 16,000 cases were recorded in the last two days.

The Iraqi Ministry of Health and Environment has warned that the citizens ’reluctance to receive Corona vaccines despite their availability reduces the steps to accelerate the achievement of community immunity from the pandemic and its elimination.

Health Minister Hassan Al-Tamimi said in a press statement that "Iraq is still in the second wave of Coronavirus and has not been exposed to a third or fourth wave, as happened in some countries."

Al-Tamimi attributed "the high number of infections recorded is because of the lack of commitment of citizens to preventive instructions, as well as holding social activities, election rallies, student graduation ceremonies, religious events, funeral councils, weddings, and the opening of markets and malls."
