On this day back in 1991, United Nations Security Council Resolution 688 has been adopted by 10 security council members which was mainly concerned with the repression of Iraqi civilians especially Kurds. 

 

The United Nations Security Council Resolution 688 has been adopted by 10 votes in favor and three against. This resolution has been raised against the high level of risk and repression inside Iraq against civilians and KRI citizens by then. 

 

The repression inside the country resulted in a high number of refugees and a high level of political risk which made the human rights state inside the country at a very low level. 

 

In 1991, to remove the threat to international peace and security, and make Iraq respect human rights and respect its citizens the United Nations Security Council Condemned the act. 

 

In the first step, the council insisted that Iraq will support and cooperate in giving access to the international organizations to the affected areas and report the number of Kurdish people that have been impacted by the Iraqi government in all the areas. 

 

As a result, the resolution has been submitted by getting 10 votes in favor and left a mark on history for the United Nations and Kurdistan people all around the world. 

 

In noteworthy, three countries including United States, United Kingdom, and France used the resolution to impose a no-fly-zone in the region aimed to protect humanitarian operations and provide a safe environment for the Kurdish people. 

 

On Monday, the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil stated in a statement on their social platform that " On this day back in 1991, the United_States helped in establishing a safe haven by imposing the no-fly zone above the 36th parallel line in Iraq to ensure the safety of the Kurdish people. The United States reaffirms its commitment to stand with the Kurdish people and to continue supporting a strong Kurdistan_Region within a federal Iraq."
