Rocket falls near Iraqi base hosting U.S. troops

A rocket fell on Sunday in a rural area close to an Iraqi military air base hosting some U.S. contractors, but there were no casualties, Iraqi security officials said.
The two rockets hit near the Balad airbase hosting US soldiers north of Baghdad, three days before a new “strategic dialogue” starts with the new US administration, a security source told AFP.
Initial investigations showed that the target of the attack was to strike Balad air base, north of Baghdad, but the rocket fell short and hit the village of al-Bu Asi just southeast, they said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the strike, which caused no casualties or damages, but Washington routinely blames Iran-linked Iraqi factions for such attacks on its troops and diplomats.
