Iraqi judge who presided over Saddam's trial dies of COVID-19

Mohammed Oreibi, the judge of the criminal court that tried Saddam Hussein and Baath figures for the anfal crimes and the bombardment of Halabja with chemical weapons and a number of other files, died Friday after being infected with coronavirus.

 

A private source in Baghdad confirmed the death of Judge Oreibi in a statement to PUKmedia, adding that Judge Mohammed Oreibi had been infected with coronavirus for days and had received medical treatment, but that the injury was severe and the body's oxygen level was low.

 

Judge Mohammed Oreibi was born in Baghdad's Eastern Karrada region in 1969. 

 

He entered the Faculty of Law at Baghdad University in 1987 and graduated in 1992, on October 3, 1992, practicing law, and on September 14, 1998, he entered the Judicial Institute and graduated with the 23rd session, and in September 23, 2000 appointed a judge by republican decree. 

 

Oreibi was appointed as an investigating judge of the Iraqi Supreme Criminal Court in the trial of former President Saddam Hussein and his regime on August 1, 2004. He presided over the second body of the Iraqi Supreme Criminal Court on September 20, 2006. Which examined the issues of Anfal, the suppression of the popular uprising, the bombing of Halabja and the liquidation of religious parties.
