On the occasion of March 8, International Women's Day, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)'s politburo issued a statement and announced that the "PUK will continue to support the struggle of women like always."

Text of the statement said:

March 8 is the day to reaccelerate the struggle of women freedom and equality seekers of Kurdistan and the world. On this day we congratulate all girl and women freedom seekers of Kurdistan.

March 8 is the day to reaccelerate the struggle of women to achieve their rights, establish gender equality, and surviving the traditions and old and forced upon thoughts that resulted in oppressing women and depriving them from their social and lawful rights, as well their active participation in the important sectors of life and society.

Kurdistan women have had real participation in the national and patriotic struggle to survive injustice and persecution of occupiers and the struggle to confront terrorism, so on this day, we not only recall March 8 as the day of the struggle of women freedom seekers, but we also commemorate women and martyrs and strugglers who have become the symbol of courage for Kurdistan women in the frontlines of war with the enemies of freedom, humanity, and our people, and gave their lives during the Anfal genocide, the Yazidis genocide, and the ones who honorably died inside the cold dark sells of the enemy. We also recall those women who were victims of violence. As well as those women who are a pride for Kurds, we recall the steadfastness of mothers, wives, daughters of martyrs and the Anfals and we bow our heads before them.

After the Kurdish uprising, the civil and democratic struggle against gender inequality and violence against women and the struggle to change the old laws with new ones that achieve women's rights have taken great steps, but the path of struggle for Kurdistan women to survive violence and gender inequality and struggle to achieve patriotic and democratic duties is still very long.

The PUK will continue to support the struggle of women like always and have achieved gains for women in action and for now and the future, we will not come short in supporting the struggle of women and providing better grounds for active participation of women in all fields, address the social issues and its laws, and paving the way for new bloods and new energies of women freedom seekers to come forward.

Congratulations to women on March 8

Hail to the struggle of women freedom seekers of Kurdistan

About March 8, Women's Day

International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated each year on March 8, throws the spotlight on women and their rights. grew out of the labor movement to become a recognized annual event by the United Nations (UN).

Beginning early 1900s, IWD is “a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality,” according to the official IWD website.

The theme of 2021 is Let’s all choose to challenge. “We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women‘s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge,” states the website.

The idea of IWD to make the day international came from a woman called Clara Zetkin. She suggested the idea in 1910 at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. There were 100 women there, from 17 countries, and they agreed on her suggestion unanimously.
