The new governor of Erbil was elected on Monday after the last governor died of coronavirus in November last year.

The Governor Council of Erbil named Umed Khoshnaw as the new governor of Erbil Governorate, succeeding the late Governor Firsat Sofi.

The voting session took place in the Erbil Governorate Council with the absence of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc who boycotted the provincial council meeting to name a new governor.

On the matter, Nafiz Nawpirdani, a member of the PUK bloc in the Erbil Governorate Council, told PUKmedia that they did not vote to elect the new governor who was from Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) bloc.

He said that the reason behind the boycott is that the KDP has not been able to preserve balance within the council for years, pointing out that those who voted for him were from the KDP itself, the Turkmen, and the quotas.

Erbil Governorate Council includes 30 members from different blocs but the newly elected governor received 18 votes out of 23 votes as the PUK bloc boycotted the session.
