The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi Council of Representatives headed by Alla Talabani held a meeting on Sunday with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi.

The spokesperson of the PUK bloc, Dr. Bakhtiar Shaways, said in a statement that during the meeting, the PUK bloc renewed the emphasis on solving the outstanding problems between the governments of the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad on the basis of the constitution, especially the problem of the Kurdistan Region’s share and employees ’salaries.

He added that another axis of the meeting was devoted to highlighting the problems of Kirkuk, Khanaqin and the excluded areas (disputed areas) from the Kurdistan Region, and finding constitutional and legal solutions to these problems.

He continued that during this part of the meeting, the MPs of the PUK bloc in the Council of Representatives pointed to those areas and the problems and immediate and realistic solutions in a manner consistent with the sensitive and special situation of these areas.

It is noteworthy that the disputed areas are originally Kurdish areas defined by the Article 140 of Iraqi constitution as being Arabized during the former Iraqi Baath regime. Kurdish residents of these areas often face threats of land confiscations from resettled Arabs apart from the repeated terrorist attacks due to the existing security gaps in those areas.
