Iraqi President receives condolence message from Turkish Counterpart, Pope Francis

Dr. Barham Salih, President of the Republic of Iraq, received, on Thursday, messages of condolence from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vatican's Pope Francis condoling the victims of the two bombings that targeted Tayaran Square in Baghdad.

 

32 People died and 110 were injured in two suicidal bombings which took place in the Tayaran (Aviation) Square in one of the markets of Baghdad among a large crowd of people who were carrying out their daily work.

 

The following is the text of the messages:

His Holiness Pope Francis was deeply saddened to learn of the bomb attack on Tayaran Square in Baghdad this morning. In deploring this senseless act of brutality, he prays for the deceased victims and their families, for the injured and for the emergency personnel in attendance. Trusting that all will continue work to overcome violence with fraternity, solidarity and peace, Pope Francis invokes upon the Nation and its people the blessing of the Most High.

Mr. President of the Republic,

Dear brother,

 

It is with great regret that I received the news of the death and injury of many civilians as a result of the terrorist attack that took place today in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

 

I strongly condemn this treacherous terrorist attack, and I renew once again that Turkey has always stood by the friendly and brotherly Iraq in its fight against terrorism.

 

I ask God Almighty to have mercy on my brothers who lost their lives and the speedy recovery of the wounded, and I offer in my name and in the name of my people through your Excellency my condolences to the friendly and brotherly Iraqi people.
