Guterres is interested in visiting Iraq

UN Special Representative, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert confirmed the Secretary-General's desire to visit Iraq.


This came during a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the federal government, Mohammed al-Hakim in Baghdad on Wednesday 20/2/2019.


A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that, "al-Hakim and Hennis discussed the overall political developments taking place in the Iraqi arena and UN's efforts in supporting Iraq," adding that Hennis confirmed the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres's interest to follow up the affairs of Iraq and his desire to visit Baghdad."


The statemen added that, "The two sides discussed joint cooperation in the field of clearance of mines and explosives in the Iraqi territory," pointing out that "al-Hakim reviewed the efforts of Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi in the fight against corruption, including the formation of the Supreme Council to combat corruption."
