A widespread strike by the teachers in Iraq

17/2/2019 12:15:00

The comprehensive strike of tutors and teachers entered into force in a number of governorates due to the failure of the federal government to implement their demands to raise the standard of living and allocate land plots.

The strike will continue until Monday, and the teachers' union branches in Baghdad and the provinces faced the procedures to implement the strike decision.

The union promised that “the strike is a real message to the government and parliament in order to pay attention to the educational process, stressing that "the first requirement is to reform the educational process, which is going through a great downhill and this is confirmed through global reports," noting that "Iraq has become outside the international classification and this is unfortunate.”

"The second requirement is to reform the situation of the Iraqi student and reform the curriculum in support of teachers in addition to the rehabilitation of infrastructure," noting that "the reality of the infrastructure is very bitter and Iraq needs thousands of schools."

"The third requirement is to allocate a budget worthy of the Ministry of Education, which will develop the teacher through real development courses suitable for tutors and teachers in the light of the curricula that have been changed," explaining "Another requirement is to provide housing guaranteed by the Constitution and the law, which is for the provision of housing for the Iraqi citizen, especially the teachers.”

The Union explained: "The last demand is to lift the injustice of teachers in particular and state employees in general regarding the promotion in due date.

For its part, the Ministry of Education said that the demands of the union from the powers of the government and the teachers’ strike from official work "is not the ministry’s work, but falls on the union of teachers and the government.”
