US Acting Defense Secretary Patrick M. Shnahan has just arrived in Baghdad.

Sources in Baghdad said that the US official will meet the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Federal Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi, and military officials, where he will discuss the future of US forces in Iraq.

According to Reuters, Shanahan will confirm US support for Iraq's sovereignty in his visit.

The visit comes days after US President Donald Trump announced he planned to keep his country's troops in Iraq to "monitor Iran".

Trump also revealed that part of the troops he will withdraw from Syria will remain in Iraq to monitor Iran.
