The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has extended its congratulations to the University of Sulaymaniyah — known as the “mother university” — on the occasion of its fifty-seventh anniversary, highlighting its pivotal role as a scientific and cultural institution in nurturing Kurdish nationalist thought and producing many leaders of the Kurdish political movement.
In a congratulatory telegram, the Political Bureau stated:
“On the fifty-seventh anniversary of the founding of the University of Sulaymaniyah, we extend our warmest congratulations to the university president, its council, and all professors, staff, and students of this esteemed scientific and cultural institution.”
The telegram recalled that the University of Sulaymaniyah, the mother university, was founded in 1968 upon the suggestion of President Mam Jalal. Since then, it has become a major academic centre, producing graduates across various scientific disciplines in Kurdistan, other parts of Iraq, and abroad.
It further emphasised that the university has played a vital role in advancing Kurdish cultural and nationalist thought, with many of the leading figures and cadres of the Kurdish political movement once studying in its faculties and departments. This influence, the statement noted, led the Ba’athist regime to target the institution and forcibly relocate its headquarters outside Sulaymaniyah in 1981. The university was later re-established in Sulaymaniyah in 1991, following the uprising and through the efforts of devoted supporters.
The Political Bureau added that, on its anniversary, the University of Sulaymaniyah continues to witness remarkable academic progress, having recently ranked first among Iraqi universities in the British Times rankings. The PUK reaffirmed its steadfast support for maintaining and advancing the growth and achievements of the University of Sulaymaniyah — the mother university.
