PUK faction: Attacks on Kurds will not be tolerated

In the Iraqi parliament, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction has denounced attacks on and injuries to Kurdish farmers carried out by some of the relocated citizens of Kirkuk while announcing that they will exert pressure on the legislature to address the situation.

In a statement released through PUKMEDIA, the PUK faction in the Iraqi parliament stated: "We condemn the attack and injury of Kurdish farmers by some of the resettled residents of Kirkuk, especially in Daquq district where their lands are being confiscated. The negligence of some of the military commanders in the region, especially the forces deployed in Daquq, is unacceptable."

The statement continued, "This issue and the problem of other lands that were taken from the original owners and given to resettled Arabs as part of the demographic changing process carried out by the previous Iraqi regime need to be addressed swiftly. The lands are being re-taken from the original owners and given to the resettled Arabs while previously, they were rightfully given back to the original owners by the provisions of Article 140 of the constitution."

The PUK faction has submitted a memorandum signed by 50 MPs to the speaker of the parliament to form a committee to monitor the situation and press for a resolution in accordance with Article 140 of the constitution and stated:

“We believe that at this point, the activation of the committee to implement Article 140 is an important step, but what is more important is to take steps to implement the article. The PUK faction in the Iraqi parliament will make every effort to monitor the situation and pressure to resolve the issue, in accordance with Article 140 of the constitution.”

The primary purpose of writing Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution was to address the issue of the disputed territory between the KRG in Erbil and the federal government in Baghdad. The considerable Arabization efforts that were made in the provinces of Diyala, Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Saladin during the Ba'ath regime led to these confrontations.
