Attacking Kurdish farmers is equivalent to reassuming Arabization Process

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)'s Leadership Council Member Hasiba Abdullah warned over the resumption of the Arabization process and violence against Kurdish farmers within the Kirkuk Governorate's borders.

In a press conference, Hasiba Abdullah stated, "It is the responsibility of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the federal government, and the United Nations to follow up on this issue and resolve it in accordance with the constitution," noting that the Kirkuk administration's silence regarding this issue over the previous years is equivalent to supporting the intrusion on the Kurdish farmers.

Continuation of the Arabization procedure
Hasiba Abdullah stated, "The Arabization process of Kirkuk, which was pursued by the Ba'athist regime to change the demography of the province, is continuing with the attacks against Kurdish farmers within Kirkuk province by the resettled Arabs aiming to occupy their lands again.”

"The continuance of this Arabization process is a breach of the terms of the permanent Iraqi constitution, especially Article 140," she said. "At the same time, it is an attempt to damage the historical relationship between the key components in Kirkuk."

Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution was written primarily to handle the issue of the territories disputed between the KRG in Erbil and the federal authority in Baghdad. These conflicts took place under the Ba'ath government and are a result of the extensive Arabization work that was done in the provinces of Diyala, Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Saladin.

According to Hassiba Abdullah, the Kirkuk government's inaction on this matter during the past five years is comparable to encouraging outside Arabs to fight local Kurdish farmers and retake their property.

"Everyone must grasp the risks of Arabization, which are serious," she said in a statement calling on the KRG, the federal government, and the UN to settle the dispute.

Also, the implications of this issue, she emphasized, will be the responsibility of the Iraqi government and the Kirkuk administration.
