MP: President Bafel Talabani plays a great role in addressing current political blockage

Iraq 12:15 PM - 2022-07-06

Member of Parliament, MP Srwa Muhammad, praised the efforts of President Bafel Jalal Talabani to address the political blockage that the country has been witnessing for several months.

MP Srwa Muhammad told PUKmedia that currently, Iraq is witnessing a political blockage due to a lack of agreement between political forces after the elections were held last October. She noted that after the withdrawal of the Sadrist movement from the Council of Representatives, there is room to form a consensus government and address the political blockage.

MP Srwa Muhammad declared that President Bafel Talabani plays a role in addressing the blockage, saying, "President Bafel Talabani's role was and still is a positive role to solve problems and gather Shiite political blocs. He played the role like his father, late President Mam Jalal, who was a shield for all Iraqis."

"Currently, Mam Jalal's house in Baghdad has become a house for gathering different opinions," she added.

"We hope that the government will be formed as soon as possible, for the benefit of the Iraqi people, who are waiting for services and a decent life," said Muhammad.

President Bafel Jalal Talabani arrived in the federal capital of Baghdad on Tuesday evening, where he will hold a series of meetings with various political blocs.

More than 6 months after the early elections of Iraq, the country has only been able to elect the Parliament Presidency. The political parties have failed to reach an agreement on electing the new president and forming the government.

Previously, Harem Kamal Agha, head of the PUK bloc, said in an exclusive statement to PUKmedia that negotiations are ongoing between the PUK and the KDP regarding resolving the Presidential post.

He indicated that after Eid al-Adha, either both parties agree on one candidate or re-experiment the 2018 event, with each party going to the parliament hall with their candidate.

Both the PUK and the KDP are major parties in the Iraqi political arena. According to a previous agreement between both parties, the PUK gets the Iraqi Presidency post while the KDP gets the Kurdistan Region's presidential post.

The Iraqi presidential position has been held by the PUK since 2005. However, the situation changed in 2018 when both parties nominated separate candidates for the same position. The PUK’s Barham Salih won the majority of parliament votes.
