Washington: Iraq is our most important strategic partner in the region

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham affirmed the importance of promoting democracy in Iraq, reiterating his country's commitment to supporting Iraq as the most important strategic partner of the U.S. in the region.

According to a statement by the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham visited Iraq on July 4-5 to meet with senior Iraqi government officials on political, economic, humanitarian, and security cooperation with the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government.  

On July 4, Senator Graham, accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Alina L. Romanowski, met in Baghdad with Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, President Barham Salih, and Council of Representatives Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi.  Senator Graham also celebrated U.S. Independence Day with the Ambassador, embassy staff, and members of the U.S. armed services.  On July 5, Senator Graham and Ambassador Romanowski met with Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Erbil. 

In his meetings, Senator Graham expressed support for America’s strategic priorities in Iraq:  fostering stability and economic growth, bolstering democracy and governance, and ensuring security and sovereignty.  

The Senator reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Iraq as one of America’s most important strategic partners in the region and highlighted the importance of strengthening Iraq’s democracy.  He also reviewed U.S. efforts to strengthen the U.S.-Iraq relationship under the Strategic Framework Agreement, including through humanitarian and stabilization assistance, economic cooperation, anti-corruption efforts, the protection of human rights, women’s empowerment, and academic and cultural exchanges.
