PUK Forum... Consolidating renewal and progress

Reports 06:51 PM - 2022-05-28

On Saturday, the General Forum of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) kicked off with the participation of several officials, cadres, and supporters of PUK in Slemani and will last for several days.

Preparatory meetings for the forum were held previously in Duhok, Erbil, Kirkuk, Raparin, and Garmian administrations, Halabja, Baghdad, Khanaqin, and finally in Slemani.

The forum seeks to discuss the party's current and future crucial topics alongside the society's needs, challenges, and changes, as well as the political experience of Kurds as the developments, and changes in modern society and the contemporary era across the world, including Kurdistan, require a new strive and effort. In addition, it is always important for PUK to be the trailblazer and initiator of such changes.

Officials and leaders of the PUK delivered speeches and answered questions regarding the current situation of the party, as well as the Kurdistan Region in general.

Qubad Talabani: President Bafel Jalal Talabani has restored peace to the PUK

"The forum will bring the PUK closer to the people as many people believed that after Mam Jalal, the PUK can not withstand the difficulties, but the PUK did not collapse and stood on its own feet, so anyone thinking that the PUK is on the verge of collapse is living in a fantasy!" Qubad Talabani, supervisor of the forum said in a speech during the forum.

"The PUK will become the force that can flip an elephant because people expect the PUK to be innovative and a leader and end individuality in decision making... the PUK is criticized because it is the only party that criticizes and accepts criticism," he added.

"The PUK Forum is a process in which people have willingly participated free of charge and we thank them for their positions," he said.

"Under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani, we were able to restore peace within the party and review our policy... At the same time, we need to make an honest reformulation and make the PUK better and stronger because, despite the separation of some leaders from the PUK, the PUK was able to stand on its own feet," he pointed out.

He also confirmed that the forum must bring the PUK closer to the people.

President Bafel Jalal Talabani: We need an election that restores the balance of power

"I believe we need youths, women, and others to renew the blood of PUK. I believe we can all together make more progress within the party... When I sat down with students, I understood that there were many things that we can learn from them," President Bafel Jalal Talabani said as he talked about the youth during a speech at the forum.

"All people and parties of Kurdistan, one or two parties may not be satisfied with the type of governance, as the PUK today we have our own policy, we will not be behind any party, we will not leave our friends and we met the other parties, including the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and most of them have the same views of us, so we should create an umbrella and do something to make a real change in the governance of Kurdistan during the next election," he said regarding governance in the Kurdistan Region.

"We need an election that restores the balance of power," he said.

"The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan will have candidates for the positions of prime minister and the presidency of the Kurdistan region, to serve the people of Kurdistan and change the policy of government in the Kurdistan region," he added.

Regarding the oil policy in the Kurdistan Region, the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan said: "The oil policy in the Kurdistan region is rejected by us, because 60% of oil revenues go to companies working in the oil field, and do we export oil to serve our citizens? Or to enrich some foreign companies? We must reform the oil policy. We have a large gas reserve. We must follow a policy that becomes a factor in benefiting the people of Kurdistan and not the benefit of some foreign companies."

Farid Asasad: The PUK is proud of being different

During the PUK Forum, the Administrating Committee of the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) held a meeting in Slemani to discuss political and historical issues and initiatives of the PUK.

During the meeting, Farid Asasard, Secretary of the PUK Leadership Council, said on Saturday, "the forum is considered a new step for the PUK because the PUK has a different view from other parties and must remain different."

"Although the PUK is known for being different in positions, when necessary, we will have a common view with other parties, so the PUK is proud of being different, but where there is a public interest, we agree with other parties," he added.

The meeting was attended by Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmad, Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, Aso Mamand, Political Bureau Administrators, Arez Abdullah, Politburo Member, and Farid Asasard, Secretary of the PUK Leadership Council.

During the meeting, Arez Abdullah said: "The PUK Forum is an excellent initiative as the party has had an effective great role throughout history, so we call on the youth to ask the PUK's veteran strugglers about the history of the PUK, what they have seen and done, and we call on the veteran strugglers to ask the youth what they see and what they want for the future, so that we can record another historic future."

Meanwhile, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmad, Administrator of the PUK Politburo, said: "No one denies the blooming of the PUK and Slemani because, within the framework of preparations for the forum, we have held 18 workshops in Slemani alone in which 73 groups were working to make the recommendations more direct... We also held a general survey in which 1,100 people from different regions participated, which is very precise because it was worked on without setting conditions... The survey shows what hope people have for the PUK and how they consider the progress of the PUK as their own progress."

"The changes of the PUK should be in line with the current era and as we are approaching the anniversary of founding the PUK, I congratulate Mrs. Hero Ibrahim Ahmad for recording a part of the great history of our PUK," she added.

Also during the meeting, Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, Administrator of the PUK Politburo, said: “We as the leadership of the PUK consider ourselves an executive and practical party and at the same time we are close to the hardships and wounds of the people of Kurdistan, so this forum must be held annually because the PUK is the party of yesterday, today and, tomorrow, which is why by renewal we don't mean changing the figures but we mean changing policy."

"The policy of the PUK is clear and the presence of this large crowd in the forum shows that the PUK is alive," he said.

Meanwhile, Aso Mamand, also an Administrator of the PUK Politburo, said: “We continue on the path of President Mam Jalal because he left us a legacy of struggle... Therefore, the best way to offer loyalty to President Mam Jalal is to continue his path."

“Our youth should be brought forward and respected,” he said.
