The number of people vaccinated against Covid exceeded 14 million in Iraq, the Federal Ministry of Health confirmed on Sunday.
The director of the immunization program at the Ministry of Health, Firas Al-Moussawi, said in a press statement that "the number of vaccinated people currently exceeds 14 million, including more than 8.668 million vaccinated with one dose, and 5.8 million vaccinated in two doses."
He pointed out that "there is a large sum of vaccines in stores, as Iraq has contracted more than 40 million doses, of which 20 million doses have arrived so far."
Al-Moussawi added: "The number of vaccinated 12-year-olds (school students) reached 400,000 with a first dose, and 130,000 with a second dose."
Covid cases have surged in Iraq after the health authorities recorded the new Omicron variant in the country.
Omicron variant was first reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 24 and was designated as a variant of concern two days later as it spread to several countries.
According to WHO, Omicron causes milder symptoms than the Delta variant.
So far, Iraq has recorded 2,110,683 cases and 24,242 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic.
