President Salih: The terrorist incident in Basra is a desperate attempt to destabilize the country

The Iraqi President, Barham Salih, stressed on Tuesday, that the terrorist incident in Basra is a desperate attempt to destabilize the country.

The Iraqi President tweeted, "the terrorist  incident that targeted our people in Basra and at this time is a desperate attempt to destabilize the country." 

"We have no choice but to unite, protect social peace, and punish the perpetrators," he added.

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi also condemned the terrorist  incident and said, "we directed the authorities to carry out accurate investigations to uncover the planners and perpetrators of the cowardly terrorist bombing that targeted our people in our beloved Basra."

A bomb killed four people in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Tuesday, the first such attack in years in a part of the country that has enjoyed relative stability, and a senior official said Islamic State militants were suspected of carrying it out.

The blast, near a major hospital in the predominantly Shi'ite Muslim city, was caused by a motorbike rigged with explosives, the military said in a statement, citing preliminary information.
