On Sunday, Qubad Talabani, KRG Deputy Prime Minister, stressed the necessity of ending the phenomenon of violence against women in societies and eradicating the culture of their killing.

During his speech, Talabani stated, "We apologize to the students and know that they care more about the flag of Kurdistan than we do, especially the girls of the University of Slemani who have proven that they are on the same level with the males, in demanding their rights."

Talabani affirmed his belief in gender equality and that, as Deputy Prime Minister, he did not back down from his words that the male should be (a man and not practice violence against women.)

He also expressed his belief in freedom of expression and the need to change societal laws on important issues and that the ministries of higher education, education, culture, and endowments play an important role in educating citizens on women's rights issues.

Qubad Talabani continued, "It is time to develop the scientific vision in all fields because the main reason behind our stagnation is because of our weak scientific view and at the same time we must change our mindset and behaviors with women, adding, "We must take this issue seriously in society, that there is no honor in the killing women, and that retributing the criminals is not sufficient to reduce violence against them."

The Gender Equality Forum is a part of the 16-day campaign to combat violence against women, launched earlier on Sunday in the city of Erbil, is a strategy to strengthen the status of women in the Kurdistan Region, with the participation of prominent officials in the region, consuls and representatives of several countries and organizations concerned with women in the Kurdistan Region.
