The Kurdish feature film "Zalava" by Kurdish director Arslan Amiri was widely welcomed by viewers at the "Toronto International Film Festival" in Canada.

The film is the first long film by the director Arslan Amiri.

The film was screened at the "Midnight Madness" section of the 46th Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. It was the film's second participation in an international festival.

Midnight Madness is one of the main sections of the Toronto International Film Festival, held since 1988, which includes the film categories of horror, fantasy, science fiction, and action. The screening of films in this section begins at midnight. The film "Zalava" was the only Asian film in this exciting section.

It is noteworthy that the "Toronto International Film Festival", along with the "Sundance Film Festival", are two of the most famous film festivals in North America.

"Zalava", written by Arslan Amiri, Ida Panahandeh, and Tahmina Bahram, won the Grand Prize for the best film at the 36th Venice International Film Critics’ Week. The Venice International Film Critics’ Week is an independent and parallel section of the Venice International Film Festival organized by the Union of Italian Film Critics (SNCCI).

The story of “Zalava” is set in 1978 in a small village called “Zalava”, where the villagers claim that a demon is among them.

A young sergeant who investigates the claim crosses paths with an exorcist attempting to evict the demon from the village. He arrests the exorcist on a charge of fraud but suddenly finds himself stuck in a cursed house with his lover. The villagers who believe they are both possessed by the demon decided to kill them.

“Zalava” received the award for best directorial debut at the 39th Fajr Film Festival in Tehran in February.
