Two killed in a terrorist attack near Kifri district

Kurdistan 10:55 AM - 2021-09-22

Two people were killed and several others were injured as unknown groups set up fake checkpoints on the borders of Kifri district and fired at passing vehicles.

A security source, who declined to be named, told PUKmedia that the incident took place in the village of Al-Salihiya in the Kifri district of the Garmian Administration-Kurdistan Region.

According to the source, an unidentified armed group set up a fake checkpoint near the village of Al-Salihiya on the road linking the Kalar and Kifri districts in the Garmian region.

The group is suspected to be affiliated with the Islamic State terrorist organization (ISIS). The group opened fire on civilian cars passing on the road.

The source also indicated that the armed group fled to an unknown destination and the security forces began carrying out a raid and search operation in the area to find the perpetrators of the attack.

Iraq has announced its military victory over the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2017 after three years of battle with the terrorists. However, remnants of the group continue to pose threats, especially in the areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

Terrorists exploit the security gaps between the Iraqi army and the Kurdish Peshmerga points. ISIS terrorists ambush, abduct, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces around the regions between the Iraqi army and Peshmerga.

Despite the announcement of forming joint coordination centers between the Peshmerga and Iraqi forces in the disputed areas last May, the operation is still not yet implemented on the ground which has raised concerns of the locals whose lives are under continuous threat.
