At the request of the Deputy PM of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Erbil, an important meeting was held in the presence of the head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee and the deputy chairman of the Sports and Youth Committee of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

"We visited Erbil with Dr. Dyar Taib Barwari, deputy chairman of the Sports and Youth Committee, and Raad Hamoudi, the head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee, at the request of the deputy head of the KRG Qubad Talabani, who visited Erbil to discuss some important issues related to sports in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region," Arazw Muhammad, the decision-maker of the Sports and Youth Committee in the Iraqi Council of Representatives, told PUKmedia.

"Our meeting included several axis, one of which was how to professionalize sports, meaning sports to be the main profession for athletes, and the separation of sports from politics, and no more political hand in this important field," she added.

The meeting also discussed sport cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil and also talked about sports support through the private sector.

"Another topic was how the Kurdistan Region's sports were adapted to the laws that we are amending in the Council of Representatives," said Muhammad.

"So for our part, we have expressed our full support for any cooperation in Baghdad and Erbil to improve sports," she added.

Athletes and sports enthusiasts often complain of KRG's negligence for sports sector and this was confirmed by the PUK Co-President, Lahur Sheikh Jangi.

"It is unfortunate that in the past, the government has neglected the sports sector and political conflicts have caused the youth in the Kurdistan Region to despair," he said in a statement.
