Kurdistan Parliament commemorates the Anfal

On the occasion of the anniversary of the Anfal, the Kurdistan Parliament held a ceremony on March14, 2010. In attendance were the Kurdistan Parliament Presidency Board, MPs and the staff of the Parliament. The Parliament’s Presidency Board and MPs lit candles to commemorate the tragedy.

In a speech, the Kurdistan parliament President Dr Kamal Kirkuki stated that the people of Kurdistan had faced genocide in the 20th century alone amid the silence countries around the world. He stressed that the recognition by the Iraqi Supreme Court of this crime as genocide.  With the assistance of international organizations, both humanitarian and scientific, he wants the genocide against the Kurds to be proven conclusively.  Dr. Kirkuki encouraged the establishment of a special committee to support the work to collect evidence from the Anfal.

He also said that the Kurdistan Region should insist that the next Iraqi Government and its Parliament apologize to the people of Kurdistan.

Dr Kirkuki concluded his speech by saying that our weapons are democracy and our unified position at home and abroad.

Representatives from the lists and political parties that make-up the Kurdistan Parliament delivered speeches and then a lecture on the Anfal operations was presented.  The ceremony ended with the Kurdistan National Anthem (Ai Raqib).
